What is Assessment for Learning?

Black and Wiliam 'Inside the black box ' brought the idea of formative assessment or Assessment for Learning (AfL) to the fore

Assessment for Learning means using evidence and feedback to identify where pupils are in their learning, what they need to do next and how best to get achieve this. In practice, this means obtaining clear evidence about how to drive up individual attainment; understanding between teachers and pupils on what they need to improve, and agreement on the steps needed to promote sound learning and progress

What the Gloucestershire Teachers say...

"AfL is ongoing and should be embedded in all lessons for all students. It is not a collection of classroom strategies that can be dipped into at will. It is an ethos that underpins all teaching and learning."
